What Is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a physician who focuses on the health of the feet, ankles, and the structures that support them. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) are trained to evaluate how problems in the lower extremities affect the entire body — from pain and mobility issues to balance and long-term joint health.

Podiatrists care for patients of all ages and treat a wide range of conditions, from everyday foot concerns to complex medical and surgical problems. This includes injuries, infections, deformities, nerve conditions, and complications related to chronic illnesses such as diabetes or circulatory disease.

Because the feet play a critical role in how we stand, walk, and move, podiatric care often goes beyond treating symptoms. A podiatrist works to identify the underlying cause of pain or dysfunction and create a treatment plan tailored to each patient’s lifestyle, activity level, and overall health.

Podiatric care may include:

  • Comprehensive foot and ankle evaluations

  • Imaging such as X-rays or advanced diagnostics when needed

  • Non-surgical treatments like medications, injections, orthotics, and physical therapy

  • Preventive care to reduce the risk of future problems

  • Surgical care when conservative treatments are not enough

Podiatrists frequently collaborate with primary care physicians, orthopedic specialists, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated, well-rounded care. Regular visits to a podiatrist can be especially important for patients with diabetes, athletes, and anyone experiencing persistent foot or ankle pain.
